Analysis of Vocational and Residential Preferences of Rural Population: Application of an Experimental Technique to Rural Slovenia AgEcon
Zanni, Alberto M.; Davidova, Sophia; Bailey, Alastair.
This study represents the first application of Choice Experiments to the analysis of the monetary and non-pecuniary determinants of vocational choice and spatial labor supply. It identifies the determinants of individual’s choice of jobs and place of residence, and provides a better understanding of the process of rural labor adjustments in a country in transition, Slovenia. The results indicate that the effect of wages, as the main factor influencing employment choice, is counterbalanced by other determinants affecting working conditions and residence. A considerable degree of immobility in terms of migration and commuting has been revealed. As a result, a rapid urbanisation process is unlikely to happen in the near future, according to individuals’...

Oligomannose-coated liposome (OML)-based vaccines have been reported to induce Th1-based immunity against entrapped antigens in immunized animals and to show protective effects against several protozoal diseases. In the present study, we produced a recombinant Babesia rodhaini ribosomal phosphoprotein P0 (rBrP0) that showed immunological cross reactivity with another rodent Babesia parasite, B. microti. We evaluated the efficacy of vaccination with OML-entrapped rBrP0 on B. rodhaini and B. microti infections in mice. Prior immunization with the OML-based rBrP0 vaccine, or with a Freund’s adjuvant-based rBrP0 vaccine, failed to demonstrate any protective effect against lethal infection with B. rodhaini, but the OML-based vaccine did induce protective...

Mentorship Alliance between South African Farmers: Implication for Sustainable Agriculture Sector Reform AgEcon
Femi, Olubode-Awosola; van Schalkwyk, Herman D..
South Africa's agricultural sector is characterized by a skewed participation of the population. There are vastly white commercial farmers and black subsistence farmers. This is attributed to the past government's intervention in the economy, which lead to exclusion of and discrimination against the blacks regarding access to land. The new government is committed to redressing this imbalance through agricultural reform and development strategies namely land, agrarian, trade and market reforms. One of the government's primary policy thrusts is to provide access to agricultural land for people not adequately represented in the agricultural sector. However, the government lacks sufficient resources to provide land and support services to the farmers been...

The Impact of Social Capital on Economic Performance of Agricultural Producers in the Czech Republic AgEcon
Wolz, Axel; Fritzsch, Jana; Pencakova, Jitka.
In the Czech Republic, agricultural production is still dominated by corporate farms. Private farms have been established since the change of the political regime, but their role is not that relevant as originally anticipated. Among both groups, some have been economically more successful than others. In general, a varying adoption of pr oduction factors is identified as being of influence. Whether their ability to collaborate with other farms is an additional factor which has been discussed under the concept of social capital since quite some time will be analyzed in this paper. Based on the findings of a survey among a sample of 62 farms by adopting factor and multiple regression analysis it can be deduced that social capital is indeed a significant...
